Trilling Nighthawk (Photo and text by C. Remmerde.)

nighthawkI thought these guys had all migrated away, though I thought I heard one on a recent walk, but it was in the distance, so not definitive. In the summer, when you get too close and they fly up, they utter a strange sort of musical cackle. This one fluttered up quietly this morning and then just landed and sat there, so I got a couple of photos. Notice the unique way they sit on a branch, contrary to most bird behavior. At first I thought it might be a Poor-will but, since it flew, and I saw the white markings on its wings, I was able to determine that it is a lesser nighthawk, as far as my knowledge goes.
